Why American Couples Are Choosing the UK for Their Wedding

There’s something undeniably romantic about the idea of getting married in England. The history, beautiful architecture and sense of tradition are difficult to replicate anywhere else and, for many of our American clients, that’s a huge part of the appeal.

We’re incredibly lucky to have such a variety of beautiful and historic wedding venues here in the UK. From magnificent English country houses and private estates surrounded by rolling countryside to world-renowned London hotels steeped in history, there really is something very special about hosting a wedding here.

For couples planning a UK destination wedding from the US, England also works incredibly well from a practical point of view. It’s relatively easy to travel to, there’s no language barrier and many of our country house venues and private estates offer exclusive use.

This gives you the opportunity to bring your guests together for more than just the wedding day and create an entire weekend of celebrations. A welcome dinner on Friday evening, the wedding itself on Saturday, followed by a relaxed brunch on Sunday morning – it becomes a complete experience for everyone who has travelled to celebrate with you.

And then, of course, there’s the British charm. Afternoon tea on the lawn, a game of croquet as part of a welcome event, a beautiful country church or drinks in a traditional village pub. These are the little details that give an English wedding its character and make the experience feel completely different to a wedding at home.

Is the “Bridgerton Effect” Real?

Yes, absolutely!

Bridgerton, Downton Abbey and Pride and Prejudice have undoubtedly played a part in the growing love for British weddings. They capture that sense of history, romance and understated luxury that so many couples are drawn to.

But in reality, you don’t need to create a themed wedding to embrace that feeling.

For us, it’s about taking the elegance and romance of a beautiful British setting and making it feel personal to you. The result can be refined and timeless, while still having the energy, atmosphere and incredible guest experience our American clients are looking for.

Planning a Wedding in England from the US

Planning a destination wedding from another country can understandably feel daunting, particularly when you don’t know the venues, suppliers or how weddings work here in the UK. This is where having an experienced British wedding planner on the ground can make an enormous difference.

We regularly work with American couples planning weddings in London and the English countryside, managing the planning process here in the UK while keeping our clients fully involved in the decisions that matter.

With over 17 years’ experience planning weddings and events, we understand both the possibilities and the practical considerations that come with hosting a celebration in a historic British venue or private estate. From venue sourcing and supplier recommendations to budgets, timelines, design and on-the-ground logistics, our role is to make the planning process feel clear and manageable from the outset.

The weddings we plan are often spread across two or three days and begin with a welcome dinner. This might be an intimate gathering for close family and friends or a larger celebration for everyone attending the wedding.

We can also create optional experiences for guests throughout the weekend, giving them the opportunity to spend time together beyond the main celebrations while still allowing plenty of freedom to explore at their own pace. It’s about creating a thoughtfully planned itinerary that feels considered, but never overly structured.

Whether you’re looking for creative support through our Wedding Styling service or complete Full Wedding Planning for a Single Day or Multi Day Celebration, every wedding is approached with fresh eyes. Creativity, seamless execution and an unwavering attention to detail sit at the heart of everything we do.

The Appeal of an English Country House Wedding

For many of our American clients, the dream is an English country house wedding – a beautiful historic property, sweeping grounds and the opportunity to bring friends and family together in one place.

Exclusive-use country houses and private estates work particularly well for destination weddings because they allow you to create a celebration that unfolds naturally over several days. Depending on the venue, the wedding itself might take place within the house or grounds, or you may choose to create a beautiful marquee wedding within the estate.

A marquee can give you greater creative freedom when it comes to the design, layout, lighting and production of your wedding. However, it also brings an additional layer of planning and logistics, from power and access to catering infrastructure and guest flow.

Having an experienced planning team overseeing these elements is incredibly important, particularly when you’re managing the process from another country.

Bringing the Best of American and British Weddings Together

One of the things we love about planning weddings for our American clients is bringing together the best elements of American and British celebrations.

American weddings are often incredibly considered and experience-led, with a real emphasis on how guests feel throughout the entire weekend. Detailed itineraries, beautiful welcome gifts and thoughtful personal touches are all hugely popular.

There also tends to be a stronger focus on lighting, production and décor, with many of our American clients looking for a beautifully polished finish and a little more impact and theatre.

Personalisation is important too, whether that’s a bespoke monogram woven throughout the wedding, beautifully designed stationery or signature cocktails served during cocktail hour. Entertainment certainly goes up a level! High-energy, interactive live bands with larger line-ups are incredibly popular, followed by an after-party and a fantastic DJ keeping everyone dancing into the early hours. Combine this with the history, elegance and character of a British venue and you can create something really quite special.

Bringing Your Wedding Vision to Life in the UK

Historic British venues are incredibly beautiful, but they can also come with their own unique set of considerations. Restrictions around sound, access, space and production can be very different to venues in the US.

A huge part of our role as wedding planners is understanding the vision you have for your wedding and finding creative ways to make it work beautifully within your chosen venue.

It’s about knowing what can be achieved, anticipating potential challenges and finding solutions before they ever become a problem.

Ultimately, our role is to make planning a wedding in England from the US feel exciting rather than overwhelming, while creating a celebration that combines everything you love about a British wedding with an experience that feels completely personal to you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Planning a Wedding in England from the US

Can Americans get married in England?

Yes, American couples can get married in England, although the legal requirements will depend on your individual circumstances and immigration status. It’s important to understand the requirements early in the planning process and seek the appropriate official guidance before making arrangements.

How do you plan a wedding in England from the US?

The key is having a clear planning structure and trusted people on the ground in the UK. A UK-based wedding planner can manage venue searches, supplier communication, planning timelines and logistics locally, while keeping you involved in the important creative and financial decisions.

Do we need a UK wedding planner if we live in America?

While it isn’t essential, having an experienced UK wedding planner can make planning from the US considerably easier. Local venue knowledge, trusted supplier relationships and an understanding of how British venues operate can save a huge amount of time and help avoid potential problems later in the planning process.

What is a multi-day wedding in the UK?

A multi-day wedding usually brings guests together for a series of celebrations across two or three days. This might include a welcome dinner or drinks reception, the wedding day itself and a relaxed brunch or farewell gathering the following day.

Can we have a marquee wedding at an English country house?

Many English country houses and private estates allow marquee weddings, although this will depend on the individual venue.  Some are a necessity if your guest numbers are relatively large, due to capacity. Marquee weddings offer wonderful creative flexibility but require careful planning around infrastructure, access, catering, power, lighting and guest flow.

How far in advance should we start planning a UK destination wedding?

For a luxury destination wedding or multi-day celebration in England, we would generally recommend beginning the planning process well in advance - ideally with a minimum of 1 year, particularly if you have a specific season, country house or private estate in mind. Popular venues and leading suppliers can be booked considerably ahead, so an early start gives you greater choice and more time to plan the guest experience.
